About Jo
Jo - the worker...
Jo is a qualified and experienced counsellor, trainer and coach. In addition to her private practice she has undertaken counselling in the voluntary sector and the health service.
Jo has over 20 years experience in marketing, sales, and fundraising, working with and in multi-national companies, small businesses, local government, legal, charitable and voluntary sector organizations and further education.
She is known for her combination of the inspirational and the practical. Her lively, humourous and informative style and her ability to motivate people are among the keys which make her training so successful.
Jo - the person...
In her personal life, Jo, who once played volleyball for England, tries to practice what she preaches but spends more time worrying about the personal safety and well-being of her nineteen year old son than is really good for her! She makes a good friend but is an indomitable foe in her occasional jousts with bureaucracy.
On a voluntary basis, Jo was active in setting up the Alder Centre based at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital. The Alder Centre was the first permanent centre in the U.K. offering support for anyone affected by the death of a child. Her involvement included publicity, recruitment of volunteers, helpline co-ordinator, and support group facilitator.
Jo is convinced that she will one day win the lottery. She would like the world to be a fairer place than it is and she has on her wall the motto 'God grant me the courage to change the things that I can change, the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.' Except where her singing is concerned she tries to live by this code.
Jo - the formal bit...
Jo has a particular interest in self-actualisation and self-esteem which were the subject of her M. A. at John Moores University where she looked at counsellor training as it related to the self-actualisation of the participants.
For her Professional Doctorate studies she is furthering this research to identify which aspects of counsellor training promote self-actualisation in participants and is utilising this research to design training schemes which incorporate such aspects.
